In 1973, a small group of poets got together in the Princeton, NJ area to share their poetry. From this nucleus of poetry lovers came the long-standing U.S.1 Poets’ Cooperative. Some of the original poets are still involved in the Cooperative; others have gone on to establish fine reputations in the literary world, but continue to submit work to the journal.
In 2013, U.S.1 Worksheets, the annual journal of the Cooperative, will publish its 40th anniversary issue. The journal has been showcasing poets from the Cooperative as well as the best work that comes to us from all over America and worldwide, from such places as England, the Philippines, Canada, and Germany. We look for eclectic, well-crafted, energetic work that says something in a way we haven’t heard before and we are constantly impressed by what we receive.
We hold weekly meetings in various homes in the area. You do not have to be a member of the Cooperative to attend. Anyone who wants to share his or her own work and participate in the critique process is welcome. Email us at us1poets(at)gmail.com and we will add your email address to our announcement list so you can be notified of future meetings.
Along with Delaware Valley Poets, we co-sponsor a monthly poetry reading, which is hosted by the Princeton Public Library. This event brings together well-established and emerging poets for a lively evening of poetry and open mic.
We also donate extra copies of the journal to writing programs, which operate out of community-based settings and/or have limited budgets to provide for their students.
And each year in the spring, we throw a launch party at the Princeton Public Library for the new issue, where more than 100 people have come together to hear poets read their work in the current issue in a Quaker-style reading format.
Because we are all volunteers and receive no outside funding, for the first time since our inception, we are soliciting membership dues and donations in order to keep U.S.1 Worksheets alive as a print journal.
Any donations are not tax deductable.
